Dear friends and perspective conference participants
It is indeed a great pleasure for me to welcome you at the first International Conference on Mountaineering, Eco-Tourism & Hospitality (IC-METH) being held in June 2019 at the picturesque KIU Campus Hunza. KIU has been mandated to provide opportunities of higher education and research at the door steps of youth of the Gilgit-Baltistan region. In line with this aim, KIU sub campuses were established at Hunza Ghizer and Chilas to extend our outreach to the masses. The sub campus of Astore district and Nigar districts are also planned in 2019-2020.
The Hunza campus is unique in terms of overwhelming participation by female students in our programs and having started Hospitality and Tourism department and related programs since 2017. The enrolment is highly encouraging in the programs started. Hunza Campus has made tremendous progress in a short span of time and its team deserves appreciation. The quality of education and co-curricular activities at the campus reflects the hard work of the campus team and commitment of the students.
While emphasizing over our vision of creating Sustainable Mountain Society through their education and socioeconomic development, we have focused on good quality education, community needs driven research, initiating Engineering Education, developing technological and physical infrastructure and national & international collaboration. In context KIU organized three Conferences at main campus in the areas of Medicinal Plant Research, Engineering & Management and Early Childhood Development. This year we have planned series of conferences at sub campuses to take the national and international expertise to the sub campuses.
This conference has been planned in collaboration with national and international partners, with an aim to promote eco-friendly hospitality, mountaineering and tourism in the region. The increased tourism and hospitality in the region has no doubt brought economic prosperity but the unplanned expansion of the sector and lack of policy guidelines/regulatory framework is having serious impacts on the ecology and environment of the region. The issues of Solid Waste Management, Sewerage disposal, traffic management, air pollution and deteriorating visual quality of the area are some of the major impacts of this unprecedented expansion of the tourism and hospitality sector. The conference has thus focused on creating awareness amongst the tourists, business community, planners about sustainable and eco-friendly tourism and hospitality.
I am sure that through trans-disciplinary research and sharing it at the conference platform, the audience will collaborate with each other for developing networks. KIU and its Faculty & Students will learn from the diversified experience of the delegates and will continue to work in future as well. I appreciate the hard work of organizing team and Campus Director for arranging a memorable event. I pray for your safe travel back to your homes and will look forward for your support in our future endeavors.
With profound regards
(Engr. Prof. Dr. Attaullah Shah)
